My Top Blog Stories for 2013: Part Two

 6. MEGA EARTHQUAKE STRIKES BOHOL

A devastating earthquake that registered 7.2 in the Richter scale struck the province of Bohol last October 15 at 8 in the morning.

The mega temblor killed hundreds, injured many and left a trail of massive destruction including centuries- old churches and heritage houses.

On the other hand, the disaster brought out the best among Boholanos who responded to the calls for help from the affected families

7.MAYOR EVASCO VS DICK GORDON

Maribojoc Mayor Evasco became the underdog of the year when media and netizens ganged up on him and pilloried him for his unpopular stand in the distribution of Red Cross relief goods during the earthquake relief efforts.

He didn’t stand a chance with Dick Gordon who had the media- savvy but like the Biblical David, the unassuming mayor held his own against Goliath.

Let me add a clarification: It wasn’t a fight with Red Cross. It was a simple misunderstanding between Mayor Evasco & Dick Gordon that was blown out of proportion by media.

8.WATER, POWER CRISIS IN BOHOL

Super typhoon Yolanda may have skipped Bohol in its path of carnage and destruction but it knocked down vital power lines in Leyte where our province gets it power supply

It caught everyone by surprise. Bohol’s standby diesel power plants simply couldn’t meet the demand thus resulting in a crippling power and water crisis that lasted for three weeks.

Sales of generators skyrocketed even as most of Bohol’s resorts and hotels closed temporarily

Thank God for government officials like Department of Energy Secretary Petilla who fulfilled his promise to bring back electricity before Christmas

9. BEAUCHE SUCCESS STORY
Beaucheful inside & out

Madame Conchita “Che” Toribio De Los Reyes might not have made it in the biggest political battle of her life but Beauche International which she nurtured starting from its humble beginnings is now one of the most stable and fastest- growing Filipino- owned companies in the country’s beauty & wellness market.

She capped Beauche's phenomenal year with the first ever nationwide quest for Miss Beauche International held at the glittering Solaire Resort & Casino

who chaired the first ever  nationwide search for Miss Beauche2 013
Just recently, she has expanded beyond Philippine shores and has just finalized distributorship in the Middle East particularly in Dubai, UAE

10.PAPA REY GATAL PASSES AWAY

The Gatal Clan toned down their Christmas and New Year preparations after Papa Reynald Torralba Gatal, the eldest of Galicano Gatal & Albina Torralba- Gatal’s five children passed away last December 27.

He was my Papa Rogie’s brother

His passing marks the end of an era when the debonair, dapper and dashing gentleman ruled the society scene

He would always be remembered not only for his leadership and excellent public relations but also for his grace and talent in dancing.

He was always the life of the party and was an active Jaycee for more than fifty years

Most of all, he was a great father, fiercely loyal friend & a figure of authority & security for us his nephews and nieces

He will be sorely missed by friends and family

11.INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT SUPREMACY

The Filipina beauty scored spectacular victories in the global pageant arena with an unprecedented and record- breaking four international beauty titles.

Not even acknowledged beauty pageant powerhouse Venezuela has achieved such a feat.

Our latest world- class Pinay beauty queens are:

Miss Supranational Mutya Datul, Miss World Megan Young, Miss International Bea Rose Santiago and Miss Tourism International Angeli Dione Gomez.

Angelie Dione Gomez punctuated Year 2013 with a Miss Tourism International
victory on New Year's Eve for Year 2014
We also had a string of runners up and finalist placements in other pageants:

Miss Universe 3rd RU Ariella “Ara” Arida, Miss Grand International 3rd RU Ali Forbes, Miss Intercontinental 3rd RU Doreen Medina as well as Miss Tourism Queen Top Ten Finalist Cindy Miranda and Miss Earth Top Eight Finalist Angelee Claudett De Los Reyes

Ara Arida's Miss Universe Top Five finish marks the fourth year in a row that the Philippines has made the Final Five in the world's most prestigious pageant.

If this year's Miss Philippines will place again in the Final Five, she will join Miss Finland as the only country to have achieved five consecutive Final Five placements in Miss Universe

This bumper harvest of beauty titles has earned for the Philippines its second Country of the Year distinction

Philippines is Country of the Year in Pageantry

Bea Santiago is Miss International
Bea Santiago’s conquest of the 2013 Miss International crown means an unprecedented three international beauty titles in one year. It’s a feat that has not been achieved by any other country in the world.

Not even Venezuela, the acknowledged pageant powerhouse can lay claim to such an achievement.

For the second straight year, the Philippines placed in all the Grand Slam Pageants or the Big Five, namely; Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss Earth, Miss International and Miss Supranational

Aside from the three international beauty titles, our country’s harvest includes runner up, finalist and semifinalist placements

VENEZUELA VERSUS PHILIPPINES

Mutya Datul is Miss Supranational
Megan Young is Miss World
September 2013 proved to be a lucky month for the Philippines for we opened it with Mutya Datul’s Miss Supranational victory, a first by a Filipina and an Asian. September closed with our historic first Miss World crown courtesy of Megan Young

Gabriela Isler is Miss Universe
 Alyz Henrich is Miss Earth
Not to be outdone, Gabriela “Molly” Isler of Venezuela came from behind to snatch the Miss Universe crown from the frontrunners and pre- pageant favorites that included our very own Ariella Arida. Venezuela followed it up with their second Miss Earth crown

With two beauty titles each, Venezuela and the Philippines were headed for an inevitable clash for the distinction of being named Country of the Year in pageantry

L-R: Venezuela, Philippines, Venezuela & Philippines
With bated breath, everyone in the pageant world realized that Miss International would be the deciding tiebreaker to determine which country will emerge as the dominant force in pageantry for 2013.

TIEBREAKER: Bea after making it three for the Philippines

Of course, everyone knows by now that we have won our fifth Miss International crown

Pageant Coaches: Osmel Souza of Venezuela & Jonas Gaffud of the Philippines
COUNTRY OF THE YEAR

This is not the first time that the Philippines earned the recognition as Country of the Year.

Forty years ago or in 1973 to be exact, we dominated the international pageant scene.

Margie Moran was crowned Miss Universe in Greece, Marilen Ojeda was 4th Runner-Up in Miss International, Nanette Prodigalidad was 1st Runner-Up in Miss Maja-International and Evangeline Pascual was 1st Runner-Up in Miss World.

2013 BB PILIPINAS GOLDEN HARVEST

The 2013 Gold Edition of Bb Pilipinas that has produced two international beauty titlists has proven to be the most successful batch

Ariella is Miss Universe 3rd Runner Up while Cindy Miranda landed in the Top 10 of Miss Tourism Queen International

Indeed, the high point in BPCI’s 50 golden years of Filipina pulchritude, poise and personality

Aside from Bb. Pilipinas’ Golden Harvest, Cory Qurino’s Miss World Philippines produced its first Miss World. We finally struck gold after 47 years of participation that started in 1966

Not to be outdone, Angelee Claudett De Los Reyes made the Final Eight in Miss Earth Pageant

FILIPINA BEAUTY SHINES THROUGH

Year 2013 has proven to be a most bountiful year for our Filipina beauty queens. We are now being recognized as a global force when it comes to beauty competitions

With the Philippines currently enjoying its Second Golden Age in Pageantry, now is the time to review the winning formula and to sustain our winning streak. This is not the time to gloat or to brag about our ladies’ accomplishments

SALUTE TO THE PAGEANT MENTORS

Kudos also to the collective efforts of all our beauty camps for searching, training, grooming and polishing virtual unknowns & lovely Filipinas with great potentials into stunning global headturners

I also hope that Filipino designers would finally be given the opportunity to dress up our Bb Pilipinas queens when they compete abroad so that we can showcase the brilliance and artistry of our Pinoy design artists

COLLECTIVE & UNITED SUPPORT

Finally, I hope and pray that we can discard our crab mentality and that we would be more supportive of whoever is carrying the Philippine sash in upcoming pageants. Let us close ranks and be united as we support our Pinay beauty queens.

In a year that has been marred by devastating calamities, our Pinay beauty queens' triumphs in the international arena has given us not only a breath of fresh air but also a collective sense of national pride and a source of jubilation

Long May You Reign Ladies!
