Miss Bohol 2016 Talent Show Highlights

Last Saturday, July 9, the much- awaited Talent Competition of Miss Bohol 2016 took place at the Bohol Wisdom School Gym.

Although the scores earned from this particular area of judging is only 10% of the total scores that determine who makes the next cut, the candidates and their handlers make sure that they’re prepared for it.

Most I believe, have ascribed to the notion that the bigger & the more complicated the routines or the production design, the better it would be. The talent segment has become an event in itself and is usually held on a separate date and venue.
HOSTS: Your Roving Eye & reigning Miss Bohol 2015 Eda Cimafranca
True enough, the girls did prepare for the talent showdown with the most elaborate sets & jaw- dropping props & costumes that can rival those of musicals or stage plays.

EXPERT PANEL OF JUDGES

The judging panel for last week’s Talent Competition was made up of Boholano culture and arts luminaries Lutgardo “Gardie” Labad, Marianito Luspo and Vida Tirol de Juan, experts who had linkages, experience and exposure in the performing and creative arts.

HOW THE TALENT SEGMENT IS JUDGED:

The judges were to evaluate each candidate's performance and give her a score based on quality of performance, mastery & virtuosity, stage presence, star quality & entertainment value. My only quibble about the criteria was the inclusion of audience impact and relevance. Audience impact would surely hurt the girls who could only muster a few supporters. And when does relevance have anything to do with pure and unadulterated talent?

CANDIDATE # 1 MISS LILA

 CANDIDATE # 2 MISS JAGNA

  CANDIDATE # 3 MISS LOBOC

But apart from its entertainment value, does it really bring out the best of the candidates when it comes to showcasing their performing arts talent?

As judge and pageant coach, I notice that most candidates usually showcase everything in the very limited time that they have to present their talents.

 CANDIDATE # 4 MISS ALBURQUERQUE

 CANDIDATE # 5 MISS SEVILLA

  CANDIDATE # 6 MISS DAUIS
Good if the candidate is actually versatile but my advice for the girls would be to showcase ONLY what they really excel in. If she croaks like a frog, never ever dare to sing live! If you realize that the backup dancers are way way better and can actually eclipse your moment onstage, then forget having a pair of back up dancers.!

CANDIDATE # 7 MISS GARCIA- HERNANDEZ

CANDIDATE # 8 MISS PITOGO ISLAND

 CANDIDATE # 9 MISS TALIBON
Candidates and coaches have to be reminded that the talent segment is judged mainly and most of the times, solely on the basis of the girl's performance. The judges are focused on the sterling aspect of the performance, how the girl connects with the audience and of course, the star quality.

Does she catch & hold the attention of judges & audiences alike?

 CANDIDATE # 10 MISS TUBIGON

 CANDIDATE # 11 MISS DUERO

  CANDIDATE # 12 MISS DANAO

If you can out sing Leah Salonga, then showcase your vocal stylings with a solo not an entire repertoire. The judges and the audience don't have to eat the whole cake to know it's delicious, right? Having the most expensive costumes & accessories and being provided with the most impressive props would just be an exercise in futility.

So remember, focus on what you can actually deliver and what you’re really good at.

  CANDIDATE # 13 MISS PANGLAO

  CANDIDATE # 14 MISS PANGLAO

CANDIDATE # 15 MISS TAGBILARAN CITY

  CANDIDATE # 16 MISS LOON
Not many might have been blessed with the grace & fluidity of Terpsichore or trained under the tutelage of Thespis but at the end of the day, the deafening applause, the admiration from adoring fans and the chance to share with the audience one's art are all worth the endless rehearsals and the pressure to deliver.
