40 the Band to Rock Tagbilaran City Fiesta, April 30

Cebu’s iconic 40 the Band took Bohol by storm last January 26 for a one night engagement at Coclea Lounge Bar. Before an enthralled crowd made up of the young once, the baby boomers and the retired partyphiles, the famous Cebu- based band didn’t disappoint as they dished out 80’s & 90’s music made up mostly of new rock, pop rock and new wave music.

It was one memorable night when we were magically transported back to those good old days in Cebu when we would slam dance to 40’s music at the Shakey’s Mango Avenue branch over pitchers of ice cold beer. Those were the days when teeners and partyphiles alike worshipped them as the gods of rock.

The mere mention of the “40 The Band” immediately whisks me off to those halcyon days in the late  80’s in Cebu when we would slam dance to the band’s music at the Shakey’s Mango Avenue branch over pitchers of ice cold beer. Those were the days when we kissed the hallowed ground they tread on.

THE EARLY DAYS. Evolving with the local music industry for the past 33 years, the band has established itself as an icon in the local music industry. They started out in April 1986, playing for Shakey’s Pizza Parlor as the house band with original members namely, Alvin Chiong, Lyndon Banzon, Troy Degamo, Jonathan Tiu, Vincent Avanzado, Madelaine Fernandez, and Arnold Ang. By then, they decided to call themselves 40 due to the fact that their music was much influenced by the Irish band U2 thus, they named themselves after the hit single “40” from the “War” album of the said band.

THE RISE OF THE NEW CEBU MUSIC MOVEMENT. They later made it big by being part of The New Cebu Music Movement in 1989. Remember the catch phrases “Loud & Proud” and “Local Vocal”? They made their mark with the release of their hit singles “Rain” and “What I Say”. They’ve been playing in different islands of the Philippine archipelago which include Bohol, Cagayan, Ozamis, Butuan, Ormoc, and Manila. Though they remained mainly local, they have gained following from music lovers all throughout the country. Since the start, they have performed in special events and bar tours.

The band was also nominated to the first ever San Miguel Beer Music Awards which was held in Cebu. Their music has gone forward to adapt to the echo of generations. The band is presently composed of Arnold Ang, Pong Chiong, Roy Llanes, Troy Degamo, and Lyndon Banzon.

40 The Band: Live & Loud is brought to you by Coclea Lounge Bar, F Café & Bar, San Miguel Brewery Inc. & KISS 102.3 FM, This is one musical gig that you shouldn’t miss for their music transcends generations.
