Unforgettable Miss Bohol Titleholders

Less than a week from now, Miss Bohol 2014 will be selected from a bumper harvest of beauties whose ages range from 16 to 23 years old. Credit to this year's organizers led by Bohol First Lady Madame Pureza Chatto & Co- Chair Tagbilaran City First Lady Jane Yap for a job well done in mounting the pageant.

Aptly described as the quintessential Boholana, she is the embodiment of the endearing qualities of the Boholana; beautiful even in her simplicity, smart, modern yet traditional, family- oriented, caring & nurturing.

Whoever gets to be crowned as the province's most fairest will be catapulted into instant celebrity/ newsmaker status. And no matter how the winner would insist that she would never change, she will and she would. For the better.

Miss Bohol 2014 will then join an exclusive sorority of Boholanas who have won Bohol's most prestigious beauty title during the past sixty years. Most of them were overwhelming favorites when they won. Some have parlayed their Miss Bohol titles into glamorous lives and successful careers. A few simply faded away and have shunned the limelight. 

Their types of beauty, personalities and backgrounds maybe uniquely different and as diverse as the places that they have represented yet they have that common denominator: the distinction and honor of having won the top prize in the annual celebration of pulchritude, poise &personality.

Here now are some of the Miss Bohol titleholders who have left a lasting imprint on many Boholanos

1997 Miss Bohol Sandugo. Socorro d Marie Tallo Inting. She reluctantly joined and eventually won the 1995 Miss DWCT Search upon the cajoling of her teachers to represent the high school department. 

Two years later, she earned the right to represent the city in the 1997 Miss Bohol Sandugo Pageant when she was crowned Mutya sa Tagbilaran.

Known for being a witty and engaging speaker, she shines the brightest in the interviews. Presently, she is a Supreme Court lawyer.

When the Chocolate Hills Lady Jaycees took over the staging of the annual search for Mutya sa Tagbilaran in the summer of 1989, there was little fanfare and there were no expectations at all

The unexpected mega success of their first ever Mutya sa Tagbilaran boosted their confidence and made them overnight experts on pageantry

They were able to institutionalize the pageant from the recruitment of potential candidates to the staging of the pageant & coronation night

From 1989 until 1999, the dynamic Chocolate Hills Lady Jaycees oversaw the production of the pageant, considered one of the highlights of the fiesta celebration of Tagbilaran City

I have been involved with the production of these pageants from project assistant to pageant emcee.

I was the pageant’s emcee on the following years; 1993,1996,1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2009 and 2010

I owe my start in emceeing and event coordination to these superheroines from the Chocolate Hills Lady Jaycees

Imagine the nostalgic moment when I got hold of this group photo of five former Miss Tagbilaran winners & a runner up. 

Three of them went on to become Miss Bohol Sandugo queens during their years of reign

One is a Supreme Court lawyer while another is a Connecticut- based doctor of medicine. There is a banker also. Two others are US- based nurses and another one is a businesswoman in Canada

Miss Bohol Winners: 80's and 90's Decades

1983 Miss Young BoholMiss Tagbilaran City Marcelina Marcel Orimaco Gatal

The 1983 pageant was fittingly named Miss Young Bohol because it was organized by KB Bohol Provincial Federation ( Kabataang Barangay, the precursor of Sangguniang Kabataan) under its Prov'l Chair Hon. Edgar Chatto.

It holds the record of having the most number of candidates who competed on the same stage on pageant night with a total of 37 girls from around Bohol.

Miss Tagbilaran City Gemma Manding

Year 1986 was a transition period for the Philippines for it was the year of the EDSA People Power Phenomenon and the time when the Yellow Fever captivated the whole country. 

Then Bohol OIC Governor Victor de las Serna approved the holding of a Miss Bohol pageant that would start from the barangay level to really pick the most beautiful Boholana for that year.

The statuesque and very sophisticated Gemma Manding of Tagbilaran City won in a province- wide beauty search that was participated in by all municipalities and the city in a pageant that had weekly elimination rounds prior to the grand coronation night.

Miss Manding stood out and outshone all the other girls during the pageant night and swept almost all the special titles and corporate awards

When she's not flying around the world's most cosmopolitan cities and most exotic places, this licensed Civil Engineer plays her dual role as wife to Tagbilaran City Councilor Hon. Beben Inting and mother to their kids

1988 Mutya sa Bohol

Miss Guindulman Elizabeth Mumar Anana

Guindulman, known as the Queen Town of Eastern Bohol, affirmed its status as home to some of Bohol's most beautiful women when its bet, Elizabeth Mumar Anana, was proclaimed Mutya sa Bohol and was also adjudged Best in Swimsuit and Best in Gown

The 1988 edition was highly- anticipated for the swimsuit would be making its debut in the Miss Bohol pageant that year.

Elizabeth, a 22 year old business management student of the University of San Carlos set temperatures rising when she sashayed onstage in a high- cut one- piece swimsuit. 

Elizabeth went on to represent the province in the nationwide search for Miss Philippine Red Cross 1988, a popularity & personality tilt that was telecast over RPN 9 

Mestiza beauty Elizabeth Mumar Anana gave Guindulman its first and only Miss Bohol crown after a succession of runners up and finalists

TRIVIA: Did you know that Elizabeth dyed her dark brown hair to black just to look less mestiza? According to her mom, Felicitas Anana, being too mestiza during the 80's made a candidate's chances of winning slimmer.

1989 Miss Bohol Fiesta Islands

Miss Tagbilaran City Winnie Moreno Lim

989 was the year when the street dancing component of the 1st Sandugo Festival was launched with Tagbilaran City's bet Winnie Moreno Lim crowned as the winner. 

Her runners up were 1st RU Miss Talibon Cecilia Auxtero and 2nd RU Miss Jagna Yasmin Aviles

Cecilia Auxtero finished as 1st RU in both Miss DWCT 1989 and Miss Bohol Fiesta Islands 1989. 

Two years after, she gave everyone in Bohol a pleasant surprise when she was crowned the 1991 Miss Cagayan de Oro City and declared Best in Swimsuit
