Miss Cruz won over the judges and the overflowing crowd during the final question round.

AYA MONTERO @ 18

March 19, 2011. Verdant Pavillion, PINR It was a scene straight out from a lavish musical extravaganza replete with a multitude of back up dancers executing perfectly synchronized dance steps

Set to the blockbuster rhythm of Kate Perry's monster hit "Firework", it was the most amazing and most spectacular dance opening for a debutante's ball ever witnessed in Bohol.

Of course, it had to be for it was the coming out party for the youngest of Frank & Nila Montero's two daughters

Christened as Amira Alia Paredes Montero, Aya as we fondly call her, was actually born on March 21, 1993 exactly 20 years ago

The debutante and Mark So, the meticulous and creative Cebu City- based event organizer agreed on a masquerade ball as the theme for the big event

The eye- catching invite to Bohol's grandest debut
THE DANCE DIVA

The most spectacular opening number ever for a debutante's ball
I have always believed that a coming out party should not only be an occasion to highlight the very special attributes of the debutante but also an opportunity to showcase her talents be it in the performing arts or in creative arts

If there's one thing can do with ease & fluidity and with grace and perfect timing, it is dancing.

Yes, Terpsichore, the goddess & muse of dance, had bestowed on Aya the grace and poise of a danseuse. In fact, had she not pursued a business degree at CIE in Cebu and presently, in Northwood University in Florida, USA to complete her academic requirements, she would have taken the route that a prima ballerina takes

PRE- PRODUCTION

One of the highlights of the affair was an MTV- styled  music video production where Aya would lipsynch to Rhianna's "Only Girl in the World" hit song

After she was dolled up by one of Cebu's top make up mavens and stylists, Aya and the video crew then proceeded to shoot the video in different locales within and outside cosmopolitan Cebu.

Ever the trouper, Aya executed everything with nary a whimper and after a couple of days of hard work and reshoots, it was a wrap

Here are some of the video snippets of the event:

Coming Up: Aya Montero @ 18 Part 2

But before Part 2 is released, let me greet my sest a wonderful and unforgettable birthday today!

Cheers!

Alona Tropical Beach Resort

Alona Tropical Beach boasts of the most spectacular beachfront in Panglao, Bohol
:

Alona Tropical Beach Resort beckons you to God’s Little Paradise the moment you arrive.

The homey resort is one of the best found in Alona Beach, Panglao, Bohol. The beach, by the way, is named after movie actress Alona Alegre who shot the movie "Esteban " with FPJ back in the mid 70's here in Bohol

Alona Tropical Beach Resort truly lives up to its name for the whole place is a veritable South Pacific isle with a profusion of lush foliage and verdant scenery

ANTIQUE MUSEUM

The resort boasts of a two storey museum that houses a treasure trove of antiques and mementos from the past.

Priceless chinaware, lamps of different sizes and shapes and religious icons whose combined estimated market value worth a king's ransom are all found in the ground floor.

On the second floor are rooms that feature four poster beds with intricate carvings and details, antiquated sewing machines and other relics.

Alona Tropical Beach Resort boasts of having the most spectacular beachfront in the entire four kilometer stretch of Alona Beach.

Dine and wine with the spectacular beachfront only a few steps away.

Of course, a visit to Alona Tropical Beach Resort isn't complete if one doesn't take a dip in the cool and inviting waters of its awesome pool

For me, the best assets of Alona Tropical Beach Resort that make guests and visitors come back over and over again are its courteous and friendly staff who make sure that one's stay is truly enjoyable and unforgettable

Not a surprise considering that the resort is owned by two of Panglao Island's most notable community leaders and public figures, Tatay Frank Montero and Nanay Nila Paredes- Montero whose business philosophy is customer service- oriented combined with sincerity , honesty and hospitality

Domestic Violence: A Social Stigma

Domestic violence is a topic that is considered as taboo in the Philippines.

It is a social stigma, an issue that is not often spoken about in public.

Because of the ensuing complications particularly within the context of family relationships in Philippine society, victims of domestic violence are often than not, left to fend for themselves.

It is an issue that affects all of us – if not directly then indirectly and the problem, if not tackled head- on, would have serious repercussions in the future for it would always be the children of affected families who suffer the most.

Charter members of the Rotary Club of Panglao Island
When we brainstormed for our club’s ideal flagship community project, we agreed on a project that would be our humble contribution to address the problem on domestic violence particularly in Panglao Island.

If realized, it would truly be responsive to the needs of the community and can be used as a benchmark for the Rotary ideal of “Service above Self”

Details regarding the project were finetuned during the meeting held at the abode of Wim & Daisy Zanstra.

Present were Rtns. Nila Montero, Irena Heberer, Maricel Madrona, Mary Ruth Gango, Wim Zanstra, Fr. Felix Hora, Art Bagcat, this blogger and Project Chair Howard Hoffman.

The said project is the proposed residential and livelihood training center for victims of domestic violence.

The structure which will stand on a lot donated by Rtns. Nila & Frank Montero, will provide a temporary haven, offer medical and psychological interventions and lastly, help restore the center’s residents’ integrity and dignity through the acquisition of livelihood training and skills so they would achieve financial independence and be prepared for re- integration into society.

Admittedly, it is a daunting task that can easily challenge our group’s cohesion, unity and camaraderie.

Concerns have been raised not only on the project’s legalities, logistical requirements, sustainability and organizational set- up but also on our commitment, confidence and spirit of volunteerism for the project.

Can we take on the project? Can we handle the pressure and the obstacles that would diminish and lessen our enthusiasm?

The answer to these recurring doubts and misgivings was finally addressed during one of our B.O.D. (Board of Directors) Meeting through the most unlikely channels named Maria Aluna Lucen & Bless Losbanos who works for HPI.

When they heard from their boss about the proposed project and the staggering amount of money needed for it, they readily and enthusiastically came up with a plan.

They revealed to us that all 20 of them who work in HPI have agreed to donate P10 of their weekly salary to the project as their way of expressing their confidence as well as their small contribution to the project so that it will take off and be a big help for the community

We were rendered speechless and we felt humbled by the gesture of the two girls. Truly, it validated everything that we have felt for the project.

If two unassuming Panglao residents from humble backgrounds could step forward to help in an act of faith and hope, why can’t we? We cannot afford to disappoint them. Now is the time to use our collective efforts to realize this dream project and make a difference in people’s lives

Remember when Rotarian Wim Zanstra cautioned us in his May 15 bulletin editorial that “Only when the stakeholders see a need for this initiative will our Rotary Women’s House be realized and become a success”.

With hardworking & selfless Rotarians like Howard Hoffman leading the way and with the likes of Maria Aluna and Bless stepping forward to motivate and inspire us, we can confidently say that the battle is already half- won.

The Sangguniang Kabataan Municipal Federated of Panglao headed by Hon. Aya Montero reinvented the Miss Panglao Pageant and turned it into a platform for the advocacy campaign of Panglao’s youth

Now on its third year, it has become a highly- anticipated personality search that culminated with a grand coronation night that selected the town’s ambassadress of goodwill who will not only be the spokesperson for the various projects & advocacies of SK Panglao but also be a positive role model for her peers and for the community

Most importantly, the pageant highlighted the varied projects of the participating SK barangays, schools & organizations that focus on literacy, environment, cultural heritage, health & sanitation, and entrepreneurship & sustainable livelihood.

According to Hon. Amira Montero, SK Panglao Federated Chair

” The Miss Panglao Pageant is a unique pageant since there is a strong emphasis on youth empowerment and dynamic involvement in community activities.

We want the pageant to be relevant and to be an avenue to empower our youth to push for their advocacy that would benefit the community

Just like last year’s winner, Miss Panglao 2012 will dedicate part of her year of reign to launch and promote an advocacy that she believes in because beauty queens are effective advocates of worthy causes”
