Evelia Mozo Ranoco: Sassy @ Seventy

When the ever fabulous Evelia Mozo Ranoco marked her 70^th birthday, youngest daughter Celevel Ranoco Butler took time off from her job as managing director of Singapore- based Edelman, leading global communications public relations and marketing consultancy firm to organize her mom’s milestone and to gather family and friends for the shindig at the scenic and relaxing family- owned Costa Cantagay in Jagna.

The white beach house was abuzz with activity as guests started to arrive. In between the his and hellos and the captivating presence of the celebrant were the intermittent tete a tete and occasional bursts of laughter.   

Finally, the celebrant came out and acknowledged the cheers and applause from everyone. The perfectly coiffed Evelia who slipped into her another asymmetrical dress was the picture of contentment and quiet elegance even as she basked in the warmth of her family and friends.

As dusk set in and the mood shifted to a more romantic & breezy one, the party’s highlights came in one after the other even as guests partook of the feast that was tastefully arranged on one long buffet table. 

A solitary swing at the rocky protrusion was made more inviting by the rhythmic lapping of the gentle waves. It was also a night of nostalgia seeing familiar faces and hearing them reminisce about the golden yesteryears.

Turning 70 is a life-changing milestone. Aside from being a real blessing in these days of fast- paced and punishing lifestyles, turning 70 is a moment of reflection on how the celebrants have lived their lives. 

For Evelia, marking her entry into the world of septuagenarians is the time to embrace the lines on one’s face and wear them like a badge of honor. It is also a time to look back and dig out from her treasury of memories that have been collected for the past seven decades.

`Born to Apolonio Mozo and Irenea Forones of Pangangan Island, Calape, Evelia grew up amidst a simple & happy island among siblings and extended family. Renowned for her beauty & charms, she was crowned pageant queen not only in Panggangan but also in Taytay, Liminangcong, Palawan where the whole family settled during the late 60’s. 

Her marriage to the late Celestino Veronilla Abrea Ranoco produced the ill- fated firstborn Juana, followed by Velce, a BS Pharmacist degree holder from UST and Celevel, The Singapore- based global advertising and marketing executive.

At 70, Evelia has so much to be thankful for. A meaningful life and a marriage that has given her so much. She has given back to family and community by being actively involved with numerous organizations and movements such as the Catholic Women’s League and the Lion’s Club.

“There is nothing like it in Bohol yet” gushed my divine jetsetting pal Celevel when asked to give one good reason why it would be worth the trip. Celevel was excited to give us a quick tour around the place which she says is perfect for intimate holiday experience or if you are looking for an exclusive venue for a special celebration.

It took forever to fix our schedules but trust Celevel to pull off what seemed to be impossible. Except for Michael Yu & Joseph Dumadag who couldn’t postpone a client meeting in Cebu, top Boholano designer EJ Relampagos & Your Blogger headed off to Celevel’s beach house in Jagna.

From Jagna where we picked up Celevel at her lovely abode, we took a leisurely 30- minute drive before we finally reached Pure Shores Villa, a private luxury villa in eastern Bohol. Although it is located along the highway of Anda Peninsula, it is officially nestled in Sitio De La Paz in Barangay Basdio, Guindulman, Bohol.

We instantly felt at home the minute the villa’s resident manager & staff welcomed us with the brightest & most cheerful smiles and proffered us glasses of ice- cold buko juice (your choice of aqua or pink!)

Holding court in the 4,500 square meter property is a four- bedroom villa that showcases contemporary Asian architecture and modern amenities. Like the lady of the manor, the luxury villa looks effortlessly elegant and stylish and seems to be gazing proudly at the spacious grounds and at the magnificent panoramic view of Guindulman Bay.

With a total of five well- appointed bedrooms (bedroom # 5 is located under the pool cabana) and a fully- equipped & well- stocked kitchen, the fully- staffed Pure Shores Villa can accommodate 10 adults and four to six children.  

The uniqueness and exclusivity of the place plus the spacious grounds make it perfect to let down one’s hair with all the unrestrained freedom, privacy & space without losing the intimacy and the ambience for the occasion. 

A few leisurely paces from the villa is the inviting infinity pool and jacuzzi that seemed to have been carved out from the scenic promontory that overlooks the marine sanctuary. To the left is the pool cabana which is perfect for sipping your favorite drinks, enjoying a massage, getting a manicure or catching the spectacular sunsets.

To the right of the pool is the dining cabana which can also be utilized for a special event. As we enjoyed a hearty lunch by the cabana, visions of unique and memorable events and occasions were already swirling in my very fertile mind.

As dusk began to settle, the whole place acquired a more romantic feel and the jovial mood became more contemplative as everybody became lost in their own thoughts.

We almost gave in to the irresistible offer to stay overnight but work deadlines and scheduled appointments got in the way. It was one brief yet blissful experience that I really loved and I look forward to going back for a longer stay.

Miss Bohol Sandugo 1992 Pageant Revisited

Celevel Mozo Ranoco 

It was year 1992, the year that ushered in a new era in Philippine politics after Pres. Cory Aquino decided to keep a low profile after her term ended. 

Elected Philippine President was Fidel V. Ramos with Ilongga Miriam Santiago providing stiff competition.  

Bohol had Hon. David Tirol as provincial governor.  Nong Ondoy Rocha was Tagbilaran City Mayor

In the beauty derby, Celevel Mozo Ranoco, beauty delegate from Jagna created Bohol pageant history on July 25, 1992 when she became the third consecutive Jagnaanon beauty to win the Miss Bohol Sandugo crown. 

THREE YEARS IN A ROW Twenty- three years later, Jagna’s three- in- a- row has not been duplicated by either Tagbilaran City or any other town in Bohol. The first two who got the crown were Tiffany Yap 1990 and Recelle Adlaon 1991

Twelve ladies from participating towns & the capital city of Tagbilaran competed in their swimsuits, filipiniana costumes, evening gowns & onstage interviews during coronation night held at the Divine Word College Gym. Earlier, the girls competed in a separate Talent Competition.

The ladies who got the five highest composite scores advanced to the final round, underwent a final Q & A before the judges made their ultimate decision.

PANEL F JUDGES Members of the panel of judges were Mr. Joel Mercurio, DOT Asst Regional Director, Mr. Jessie Ong, Mr. Fred Discuatan, Dr. Sharleen Lim & Mr. Triton Mascarinas. Canada- based Boholano designer Shanon Pamaong chaired the panel.

ORGANIZING BODY The Bohol Medical Society was the organizing body of the 1992 pageant with the Pageant Execom composed of Ms.Carmen Gatal, Ms. Amor Lamdagan, Dr. Disi Yap- Alba, Ms. Ardie Batoy & Dr. Vidal Cresencio

The well- rounded beauty queen whose name is a combination of her parents’ names Celestino Ranoco & the former Evelia Mozo has always been an achiever. She graduated 1^st Honor from Jagna Central Elementary School, High School Class Valedictorian from Central Visayas Institute. She later married Dominique Butler with whom she has a son Breitt.

She graduated from the University of the Philippines, April 1997 with a BS Economics degree.

Presently, she heads Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, Singapore.
