Miss Bohol 2018 Press Presentation

The 2018 Miss Bohol Pageant is officially on! The Bohol media finally got the chance to meet the 21 official candidates during the press presentation held at the Le Eng Restaurant of Bohol Tropics Resort.
Miss Bohol 2018 candidates preen for the press
After seeing and hearing the girls deftly parry the questions thrown during the Q & A session, the invited media concurred with lot of pageant observers that this year’s batch is very promising and has a lot achievers with impressive academic credentials.

THE DARLING OF THE PRESS After the intense scrutiny and discernment from the girls’ responses to questions addressed to them, the mediamen cast their votes for the Darling of the Press award which will be announced and awarded on pageant night. The special award may not have a bearing on the pageant results but it is something to cherish and brag about because it’s not easy to win over the jaded media.

MAGNA CUM LAUDE GIRLS: Jesseth & Roselle

Although there isn’t a specific criteria to guide the selection of the awardee, the unwritten rule is to look for composure, confidence & substance when answering questions plus the charm & personality of the candidate.

EARLY FAVORITES  Netizens and pageant fans who watched the proceedings over DYRD Ang Kasaligan FB Page have picked the following as the standouts:

1. Miss Bilar, a petroleum engineer & magna cum laude graduate, was a picture of composure & confidence.

2. Miss Loboc, an outstanding campus personality who excels in academics and extracurricular activities displayed a depth and maturity rarely seen from someone her age.

3. Miss Maribojoc, an international flight attendant, who was effortlessly beautiful.

4. Miss Ubay, an architecture graduate who dreams of a green architecture, was a statuesque beauty.

Other standouts were Tubigon, Sagbayan, Sevilla & Talibon. The prettiest & most charming faces belonged to Sagbayan, San Miguel, Valencia & Tagbilaran City.

Finally, here’s a gentle reminder for all the girls’ supporters and fans:

The press presentation should not be treated as a barometer or indicator on who will emerge as this year’s winners.  While giving the media and the public a chance to get to know more about the girls especially on their school & career backgrounds, plus information on the schedule of activities & venues, the press presentation is primarily an opportunity to promote & publicize the pageant.

All 21 candidates will compete in swimsuits, evening gowns & onstage interviews on pageant night.  The total scores combined with the talent night scores will determine the five candidates who will advance to the final round.

DON’T FORGET: Talent Night: Friday, July 13, 8 pm, Bohol Cultural Center and Pageant Night: Saturday, July 21, 8 pm, Bohol Wisdom School Gym

And Heaven Gains Another Beautiful Boholana Angel

November opened in a somber mood for Your Roving Eye’s family. On All Souls Day, at three o’clock pm, Ate Marcel Gatal- Diego, the eldest child in our family lost in her three- year battle with breast cancer that was complicated by lung cancer.

Marcel, a top radio newscaster and FM DJ of KISS 102.3 FM and DYRD 1161 AM during her college days is survived by husband Tony Diego, children Kenneth & Katrina, Mama Fely, brothers, sisters and relatives. She was 53 years old.

A certified beauty, she was Hiyas ng Silangan- Bohol 1982. She represented the province in the 1982 Hiyas ng Silangan- Philippines national finals where she was named Miss Talent and made it as a Top Ten Finalist.

The following year, she represented Tagbilaran City in the Kabataang Barangay- organized Miss Young Bohol 1983 Pageant which she won also.

At the summer of her life

In a text message sent to the family, Gov. Edgar Chatto who was KB Bohol Federated Chair when Miss Young Bohol 1983 was staged said
” Marcel was a standout beautiful teenager representing Tagbilaran City KB Federation when she was crowned Ms Young Bohol 1983.
She inspired the Boholano youth then with her wit, beauty & grace. We extend our condolences & prayers to the bereaved family of Marcel as she begins her peaceful journey back to our Lord's Kingdom-
Edgar, Pureza, Trisha & the Bohol KB Family”
The family grieves for our loss but is comforted by the thought that Ate Marcel Gatal Diego is in a better place where there is no pain, where the sun shines gloriously everyday and where she is finally in peace.

Here are the important dates: Nov 9 & 10 – Funeraria Gomez Vigil, November 11- Necrological Mass & Interment. Final details to be updated soon

Miss Bohol 2016 Talent Show Highlights

Last Saturday, July 9, the much- awaited Talent Competition of Miss Bohol 2016 took place at the Bohol Wisdom School Gym.

Although the scores earned from this particular area of judging is only 10% of the total scores that determine who makes the next cut, the candidates and their handlers make sure that they’re prepared for it.

Most I believe, have ascribed to the notion that the bigger & the more complicated the routines or the production design, the better it would be. The talent segment has become an event in itself and is usually held on a separate date and venue.
HOSTS: Your Roving Eye & reigning Miss Bohol 2015 Eda Cimafranca
True enough, the girls did prepare for the talent showdown with the most elaborate sets & jaw- dropping props & costumes that can rival those of musicals or stage plays.

EXPERT PANEL OF JUDGES

The judging panel for last week’s Talent Competition was made up of Boholano culture and arts luminaries Lutgardo “Gardie” Labad, Marianito Luspo and Vida Tirol de Juan, experts who had linkages, experience and exposure in the performing and creative arts.

HOW THE TALENT SEGMENT IS JUDGED:

The judges were to evaluate each candidate's performance and give her a score based on quality of performance, mastery & virtuosity, stage presence, star quality & entertainment value. My only quibble about the criteria was the inclusion of audience impact and relevance. Audience impact would surely hurt the girls who could only muster a few supporters. And when does relevance have anything to do with pure and unadulterated talent?

CANDIDATE # 1 MISS LILA

 CANDIDATE # 2 MISS JAGNA

  CANDIDATE # 3 MISS LOBOC

But apart from its entertainment value, does it really bring out the best of the candidates when it comes to showcasing their performing arts talent?

As judge and pageant coach, I notice that most candidates usually showcase everything in the very limited time that they have to present their talents.

 CANDIDATE # 4 MISS ALBURQUERQUE

 CANDIDATE # 5 MISS SEVILLA

  CANDIDATE # 6 MISS DAUIS
Good if the candidate is actually versatile but my advice for the girls would be to showcase ONLY what they really excel in. If she croaks like a frog, never ever dare to sing live! If you realize that the backup dancers are way way better and can actually eclipse your moment onstage, then forget having a pair of back up dancers.!

CANDIDATE # 7 MISS GARCIA- HERNANDEZ

CANDIDATE # 8 MISS PITOGO ISLAND

 CANDIDATE # 9 MISS TALIBON
Candidates and coaches have to be reminded that the talent segment is judged mainly and most of the times, solely on the basis of the girl's performance. The judges are focused on the sterling aspect of the performance, how the girl connects with the audience and of course, the star quality.

Does she catch & hold the attention of judges & audiences alike?

 CANDIDATE # 10 MISS TUBIGON

 CANDIDATE # 11 MISS DUERO

  CANDIDATE # 12 MISS DANAO

If you can out sing Leah Salonga, then showcase your vocal stylings with a solo not an entire repertoire. The judges and the audience don't have to eat the whole cake to know it's delicious, right? Having the most expensive costumes & accessories and being provided with the most impressive props would just be an exercise in futility.

So remember, focus on what you can actually deliver and what you’re really good at.

  CANDIDATE # 13 MISS PANGLAO

  CANDIDATE # 14 MISS PANGLAO

CANDIDATE # 15 MISS TAGBILARAN CITY

  CANDIDATE # 16 MISS LOON
Not many might have been blessed with the grace & fluidity of Terpsichore or trained under the tutelage of Thespis but at the end of the day, the deafening applause, the admiration from adoring fans and the chance to share with the audience one's art are all worth the endless rehearsals and the pressure to deliver.
