Cheers to Hudyaka sa Panglao Festival 2021

Panglao has indeed grown by leaps and bounds. From a s sleepy & humble fishing and farming community, it has become Bohol tourism’s crowning jewel.

From its green international airport to its gleaming and posh resorts, private villas and podge podge of international cuisine, Panglao was on its way until the pandemic brought global trade, travel & tourism to a screeching halt last year.

Bohol Beach Club

Overnight, the bustling tourist- driven paradise practically turned into a ghost town.

Three months after the province closed its borders and implemented a lockdown, the town's visionary leader Mayor Nila Montero became the first municipal mayor to reopen its town to local tourists.

But before its implementation, the town officials led by the lady mayor, sat down with the town's stakeholders and drew a plan that would make sure that safety protocols and guidelines  would be in place before reviving its economy.

Today, despite the challenges from meager resources, skepticism from critics and the dark cloud of a pandemic hovering above, many of the town's businesses that closed during the lockdown have slowly reopened albeit cautiously.

Business has been generally slow compared to pre- pandemic times but there is a general sense of optimism.

The clamor to mark the town fiesta prompted the local leadership to mount a simple and scaled down Hudyaka sa Panglao fiesta celebration. It was a go then for all involved after  securing the green light from the IATF to stage its annual town fiesta.

Activities designed to give a little cheer to the residents of Panglao included the virtual editions of its "Pasidungog: Tribute Night for Former Panglao Leaders", Hudyaka Festival Queen Search and the Hudyaka sa Panglao Festival Ritual Dance Competition.

Panglao Mayor Nila Montero

In a message beamed through FB and other social media, Mayor Nila Montero emphasized that surmounting the obstacles and surviving the challenges brought by the pandemic is reason enough to celebrate and give thanks to the town's patron saint Sr. San Agustin. She also praised the townsfolk of Panglao for their resilience and for their strong and unwavering faith and religiosity.

The late Loy Palapos aptly coined the festival’s name as “Hudyaka” which in the Cebuano dialect, literally means merrymaking, happiness or gaiety.

Now on its 36th year, the festival was organized as an opportunity not only to celebrate the feast of the town’s patron saint San Agustin but also to reflect  Panglaoanons' strong faith through an established cultural identity and to express the gratitude to their patron saint.

Through the festival, the town is able to showcase the other side of Panglao; its way of life & rich cultural heritage aside from its stretches of white sandy beaches and dive sites.

The success of the just- concluded Hudyaka sa Panglao Festival shows that a paradigm shift, along with strict guidelines and protocols, would ensure that there are viable ways of veering away from the traditional.

Cheers to the people of Panglao!

The 47th Miss InterContinental and her KISS 102.3 FM Radio Interview

When news came that Ms. Karen Juanita Boyonas Gallman would be jetting in to Bohol for her triumphant homecoming & thanksgiving visit, Your Roving Eye took it as just another news assignment to cover and to report on.

Who would have thought that it would be an encounter of a lifetime? As I headed off to the Panglao Airport for the arrival of the latest addition to Bohol’s pride, my mind brought me back to that fateful month a year ago when Ms. Gallman became the second Boholana to be crowned a Bb Pilipinas titleholder. She was Bb Pilipinas- InterContinental 2018 which meant she was to represent the country in the pageant assignment that has been very elusive to the Filipina. The best finish ever by a Filipina in Miss InterContinental was by Christi Mc Garry and Katarina Rodriguez as 1st RU in 2015 and 2018, respectively.

Anyway, we were able to squeeze into Ms. Gallman’s very tight three- day schedule in her home province a quick visit and interview at the Bohol Chronicle Radio Corp. office before proceeding to Ubay for her homecoming visit. The formidable task of interviewing the first Boholana international pageant titleholder on air fell into my lap at the last- minute.

Karen Gallman's Heartwarming Homecoming Visit to Bohol

Bohol was thrown in a tizzy when Karen Juanita Boyonas Gallman, Bohol’s first international beauty titlist arrived for her homecoming. Everywhere she went, she was a headturning sensation. It was a heartwarming welcome indeed with a series of events packed into a tight three – day visit. At the Panglao Airport, she was welcomed by by a group of wellwishers led by her relative Cong. Erico Aristotle Aumentado of Bohol’s 2nd District, wife Mrs. Vanessa Aumentado and Hon. Aya Montero on behalf of the Panglao LGU. Karen got emotional when she saw the group of Panglao school kids who were waving flaglets and screaming her name at the arrival area.

It was a whirlwind visit but Karen never showed any hint of fatigue, irritation nor restlessness. She was in fact very grateful for the heroine’s welcome accorded her by her paisanos who were proud and thankful for the honor & recognition she gave her town Ubay and her home province Bohol.

Her journey towards the Miss InterContinental crown began when she was crowned Miss Ubay 2007 at age 14, competed in Bb Pilipinas 2012 where she was voted Miss Photogenic and made it as Top 12 Finalist. She was convinced by Madame Stella Marquez to compete again but not before getting a Business Arts major in Management at the Griffiths University in Brisbane, Australia.

She joined Bb Pilipinas again last year where she won the Bb Pilipinas- InterContinental 2018 crown. She and Catriona Gray are the only Bb Pilipinas queens of their batch to win their respective international assignments.
