Barely a year after Genica- Leah Aceron Jabines, one of Cebu Doctors University three representatives, emerged 1st RU in the 2012 Miss Cebu MedTech Personality Search, an inter- school competition, I had another reason to be ecstatic!
The reason for the unbridled pride and joy was Gissette Maurie Penales Dayan who was crowned last February as Miss Valentine 2013, an annual showcase of pulchritude, poise & personality of Cebu Doctors’ University- College of Nursing.
Gissette Maurie & Genica- Leah were both in Grade Six Charity, my advisory class in Holy Spirit School, Tagbilaran City back in 2004
I became aware of Gissette’s foray into the world of pageantry when I visited her FB page.
Initially, I couldn’t believe it for Gissette was so painfully shy and extremely introverted back then
But of course, it couldn’t be denied that even then, she already was a budding beauty and it was just a matter of time before she was to blossom into the lady that she is now

She was absolutely petrified when asked to participate in class discussions but what she lacked in class participation was more than compensated in the quality of her written outputs and academic performance and proof of the matter was being a consistent honor student.
GISSETTE THE WRITER
As her Languages teacher and school paper adviser of “The Voice”, I saw her potentials in writing and confidently assigned her as the school paper’s Features Editor after we conducted a two- day workshop & interviews on campus journalism.
There was no hesitation on my part when I assigned her to be the school’s bet for Features Writing- English category during the Tagbilaran City Division Secondary Schools Press Conference SY 2004- 2005.

My hunches were right on the money for Gissette easily bagged the Gold Medal during the Awarding Ceremony.
On a side note, 12 of my 14 delegates placed among the Top Three in their respective categories thus earning for us the right to compete in the Regional Level to be held in Danao Ciy, Cebu Province.
Only two of them qualified for the Nationals and unfortunately, Gissette wasn’t one of them but I’m pretty confident that the experience did wonders for Gissette’s metamorphosis
GRADE SCHOOL GRADUATION:
After their grade school graduation in March 19, 2005, it was with a heavy heart that I parted ways with my advisory pupils for most of them were moving to other schools and two of them even migrated abroad.
My parting shot for Gissette was to be more active in school activities and to expand her circle of friends

FRIENDS & FAMILY:
As I am blogging right now, a smile slowly came into my face when I realized that I was one of those lucky people who really got to know the real Gissette Maurie.
But the luckiest are her parents, Gilbert Dayan, my DWCT HS Batchmate from Class 1984 and Margaret “Margie” Penales- Dayan for being blessed with a daughter who can truly be described as beautiful inside and out
