Meet the 2015 Miss Bohol Girls Series # 5: Miss President CPG

President CPG formerly known as Pitogo Island rarely sends a candidate to Miss Bohol and this year, the northeastern town known for its succulent crabs is represented by a multi- talented lady who models and joins motocross races.

Meet Candidate # 15 Marjorie Theresa Barcial Monte, 21 years old, who is representing the youngest town of Bohol that is named for the province's  most famous son, Carlos P. Garcia. The svelte beauty has interned as an FM radio DJ. She finished elementary and high school as salutatorian.

At the time of the interview, she said she is also busy preparing for her thesis oral defense scheduled this week.
With Miss CPG's stylists: Jofi Pasigna & Keith Cantoneros

Here’s the history of the island- town of Pres. CPG as quoted by Marjorie from various sources:

HISTORY OF PRES. CARLOS P. GARCIA
In the early part of the 19th century, the place was part of the Municipality of Ubay, known as Lapinig Grande and subdivided into six barrios: Pitogo, Aguining, Basiao, Bonbonon, Gaus, and Tugas.

Congressman Teodoro Galagar of the 3rd Congressional District of the province of Bohol, initiated the formation of Lapining Grande into a town. Aguining, Pitogo, and Bonbonon were the barangays bidding for township. On June 21, 1969, RA 5864 was approved creating Pitogo as the 46th town of the province of Bohol with 23 regular barangays. Pitogo won the race, as it has a safe port and was closer to Ubay and Cebu.

Eight years later on November 4, 1977, it was renamed by Presidential Decree 2828 in honour of President Carlos P. Garcia, who was born in nearby Talibon.

Marjorie hopes to be an effective spokesperson for her town being a BA Mass Comm senior at USJR

Good luck Majorie and the rest of the girls

The Road to Miss Bohol 2015: Part 2

QUINTESSENTIAL QUONDAM QUEENS: Part 2

Beautiful Boholana: Olivia Solis
Lest you think of naughty thoughts, quondam means former, erstwhile or used to be. And this is exactly what this series is all about; To remember the exclusive sorority composed of exceptional Boholanas who were crowned as Miss Bohol.

As we wait with bated breath on who will be Miss Bohol 2015 on July 18, we will recall the elegant ladies who captivated an entire province during their glorious reigns.

Come July 18, a brand- new Miss Bohol will be crowned and thus join an exclusive sorority composed of exceptional Boholanas who were crowned as Bohol’s fairest.

After their respective years of reign, they went back to their individual lives. Some parlayed their Miss Bohol titles into glamorous careers, others decided to lead fulfilling lives as wives & mothers or as career women while others opted to lead quiet private lives.

This is the second of a series that pays tribute to these beautiful, brainy & well- bred Boholanas.

1957: THE BOHOLANA QUEEN
& THE BOHOLANO PRESIDENT

Both led parallel lives. She was crowned Bohol’s fairest the year Carlos Polistico Garcia, a homegrown Boholano, would assume the highest elective position in the country by ascendancy and later to be affirmed & validated with a convincing 44% share of the total votes in the four- cornered fight for president.

Both were to reach the apex of their respective career trajectories & continue to fascinate to be the newsmakers that they are

VISAYAS MOVIE QUEEN

The beautiful & charming lass from Calape who had the movie actress- sounding name of Olivia Solis later became a very popular lead actress in Visayan films. She became an even bigger star after the Visayan serial radio drama song "Dawata na Olivia" which was composed especially for her became a huge hit in the Visayas and Mindanao during the 70's.

Miss Bohol Pageant's 10 Memorable Milestones

Almost 60 years after it crowned its first winner, the province’s most prestigious beauty competition has maintained the sparkle & prestige of its name.

As the pageant quietly drops the “Sandugo” appellation and reverts to being “Miss Bohol” as it was originally known during its early years, the Miss Bohol Pageant is expected to shine and glitter even more.  Here's the link for more on the change of name: Miss Bohol: New Name. New Direction

Bohol First Lady Pureza Chatto with four of the Miss Bohol girls
L-R: Ms Buenavista, Ms Tubigon, Ms Loon, FL Chatto & Ms BISU
With no less than Bohol First Lady Pureza Chatto, together with Tagbilaran City First Lady Jane Yap, at the helm, the pageant has also gathered some of Bohol’s most hardworking & creative set including its 2005 winner & 2006 Bb. Pilipinas- World titleholder Anna Maris Igpit to ensure the grandest and most spectacular edition of the pageant this July.

With the 2014 edition of the Miss Bohol Pageant just around the corner, Your Blogger will now present ten significant highlights from the pageant’s glorious history that has spanned six decades

1957 The pageant crowned Olivia Solis, one of Bohol’s legendary beauties, on the same year that a Boholano became President of the Republic of the Philippines.

 Pres. Carlos P. Garcia
1983 Known as Miss Young Bohol that year, the pageant set the record for the most number of candidates. It attracted 38 candidates who represented the same number of city & municipal Kabataang Barangay federations that responded to the invitation of then KB Bohol Provincial Federation Chair Edgar M. Chatto.

All the girls were billeted at the air- conditioned Ilaw International Convention Center.

1988 Known as Mutya sa Bohol, the swimsuit finally made its first appearance in Miss Bohol history. Elizabeth Anana of Guindulman who was crowned the winner that year made pageant history as the first recipient of the Best in Swimsuit special award in Miss Bohol.
1991 Already known as the Miss Bohol Sandugo Pageant, that year’s edition marked the first and only time that the pageant finals were held in an outdoor venue. In fact, an open- air stage was specially constructed right in the middle of the CPG Sports Complex.

Miss Jagna Recelle Adlaon was able to duplicate townmate Tiffany Yap’s victory the previous year thus making Jagna the first town to achieve a back-to-back victory.

1992 Jagna set an unprecedented feat in 1992 when its bet, the sultry UP- educated Celevel Ranoco  won for the town its third consecutive Miss Bohol Sandugo title. The record still stands today.

Celevel is presently the Gen. Manager
of Saatchi & Saatchi- Singapore
1998 Josely Yap Ferniz of Bilar was crowned the queen in an all- Filipiniana- inspired pageant edition. It was the pageant’s tribute to the Philippine Centennial Year Celebration.

1999 It was the first & only time that the pageant selected two winners for the title of 1999 Miss Bohol Sandugo. Ria Nina Cubillo of Calape (competed under the A.B.E.N.A. sash) was named Miss Bohol Sandugo- Bb. Pilipinas while Jenifer A. Ejoc of Catigbian was named Miss Bohol Sandugo- Mutya ng Pilipinas.

No, there wasn’t a tie and the organizers insisted that the titles were of equal importance. This was also the first time that there were more judges than candidates. Seventeen judges were tasked to select the winners from the field of 16 candidates.
Two Miss Bohol Winners for 1999
2000 Miss Calape  Mellanie Wallace was a graduating high school student of Bohol Wisdom School when she was crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo that year thus entering pageant record books as the youngest ever to win the crown in contemporary times.

This was also the year when the two- piece made its debut in Miss Bohol

2005 When Anna Maris Arcay Igpit  was crowned the winner that year, she did not realize that she was about to enter two pageant history records in Bohol; she was the first Miss Bohol winner to win a national beauty title (she was the 2006 Bb. Pilipinas- World winner).

Anna also reigned for three years (there were no pageant editions in 2006 & 2007), the longest reign ever for a present generation Miss Bohol winner.
1st Miss Bohol to become a Bb. Pilipinas titleholder
2012  Idy Casenas Cagas became the fifth beauty from Jagna to win the crown. Between 1990 and 2012, Jagna has harvested five Miss Bohol Sandugo crowns, three consecutive 1st runners up placements and one 2nd runner up, the most for any town in Bohol.

A Touching Tribute for Reynald Torralba Gatal

Here's Atty. Roland B. Inting's heartfelt letter that was penned two days after Papa Rey passed away last December 27, 2013

I am reprinting this so that people will get a glimpse of Papa Rey's multi- faceted personality. I was given the privilege of reading the contents of the letter during the memorial service .

Atty. Roland B. Inting is one of the most brilliant and most eloquent Boholanos that I look up to

December 29, 2013

Dear RONIE, ROCKY, RICA, RICKY, ADLAI and RACQUEL:

In an address to the Bar Association of Boston on March 7, 1900, Justice Oliver Wendell Homes said:
“We cannot live our dreams. We are lucky enough if we can give a sample of our best, and if in our hearts we can feel that it has been nobly done.”

Your Papa Reynald may not have lived all his dreams, but we, his true friends know so well that he has given his best, and I can confidently say that he has nobly done so.

Reynald who I fondly called ROLEX just as he called me by such name, which was our bond of friendship and brotherhood, seemed to be ordinary. But in my book, he was a great father who loved you so very much and had consistently been proud of all of you his children.

Every time I asked how you, his children were doing, his eyes always had a twinkle uncommon to ordinary parents. I surmised that it may be because at your very young ages, you lost your Mom Mila, and he never remarried but poured all his love for you in ways only he could have mustered.

He may have had flings and relationships as you all know. But never in his life did he ever exchange you and substitute his love for you for another being after your Mom was gone. What a father he was!

He may not have been materially wealthy, but he was so rich with care, with concern, with dedication and specially with love for you his children, so that he would do as he did, anything to make sure that in whatever time or circumstance, you have something on the table, and that you get the education you want within his humble means.

ROLEX was never proud, arrogant or haughty. Everyone knew he was for many years in the corridors of power, but he never bragged about it, nor did he enrich himself even when opportunities beckoned him.  He fed you with what he earned bythe sweat of his brow.

I cannot recall or even think of anyone I know who has a grudge against your Papa. I know of some who may be envious, but not a soul could ever say that he was corrupt, because he never was.

Along with many of his true friends, I take pride and will always be proud if I deserve to be counted among them.

Many times we were together, spending time until the wee hours of the morning. He would doze off, but never did he leave me or anyone he was with. That was the friend I had in him. His ears were always open to serious as well as to light matters, and he was quick to share his counsels as he dug from the richness of his experiences.

You know that in my first job, he was my Station Manager of DYXT.

He made that radio station great and was number one when he was at its helm.

DYXT was the conduit of ABS-CBN in the 1971 National PRISAA held in Tagbilaran, and we were heard all over the Philippines.

Your Papa was our  leader, guide, planner, adviser, teacher, and stylist all rolled into one. He did not even hold a microphone, but he knew what he was talking about and he was the one who assigned each of us to our respective chore, either as radio announcer, field reporter or commentator.

Allow me to name members of our team; The late TibsBullecer; Tommy Abapo, Timmy Cabatos, and myself who now are all lawyers.  Proc Maslog who later became a Professor of journalism of Siliman University, Ladies Sol Amisola, Lyle, and Liz Gonzaga who was our librarian.   These were the men and women under your Papa, but he never treated us as his subordinates or his employees. He treated us like family.

I was the youngest then, yet he treated me as a brother and an equal much to my amusement and pride.

Among others, he taught me how to eat the fat of pork which I hated before, and to eat as many chicken eggs during the evenings after we had our fill of alcoholic drinks when there was nothing else to eat.

I never regretted these even if they say they’re bad for the health. I enjoyed them because your Papa taught me how to.  In all honesty, I succumbed to high blood pressure and Dodong Gonzaga and your Papa had their big laugh when I amicably blamed ROLEX for teaching me to “devour” those cholesterol.

Your Papa was always sought in gatherings among friends. No party whether in music sessions and specially in dancing could be complete and as enjoyable without your Papa.

He was loved by everyone because he was who he was…. a man of all seasons and not only for all seasons.

He was God-fearing, and had many short but sharp comments exhibiting his gratitude and love for our God. He hated hypocrites and did not hide his contempt for cheaters and those who use people for personal gains. He can be trusted with any secret and held friendship sacred, most precious and priceless. These were just a few of his assets.

with a very young Dominic Butalid & Dodong Gonzaga
The last time we were together, was in July of this year, in Ormoc City, with Dodong Gonzaga, Joe Torralba, Rene Relampagos & PopotMarapao.

Your Papa, Pare Dodong and myself shared one room for two days. Our conversations were as always varied, funny, and sometimes serious but always honest.

From Ormoc, the two of us flew to Manila via Cebu City while the rest returned to Tagbilaran on different schedules. We were together at lunch and together in going to the airport. Unfortunately, he left his plane ticket in the bag he asked your Auntie Mameng to bring back to Tagbilaran. He was worried. I helped him check into his Cebu Pacific flight first, before I checked in my PAL flight, because he had no ticket to show.

An audience with Carlos P. Romulo
We later had a long hearty laugh at that funny adventure. We had a long chat before he took his flight for Manila. When he was boarding, he gave me a salute with his usual exceptional smile only he had. He said: “See you ROLEX” . “See you”, I replied. That was the last….

Now that he is with our Father in Heaven and with your Mama Mila, no one can fill in his shoes. There was only one Reynald Gatal, and he was your great and beloved Papa.  I mourn his passing, more so because I could not be in his wake and burial. I wept in the stillness of my room, and I will always say a prayer for him and to him.

My consolation is that, with his passing, he left behind beautiful children like you all are. By your deeds, keep his name honoured, respected and loved. Help and love each other like what your Papa taught you.

You are the children of REYNALD GATAL, and no one can snatch or steal that honor from you.

Like the last time we were together, and since he had taken an earlier flight for God’s kingdom, it is my turn to salute him, with a tearful smile longing for a friend... I say: “ROLEX, see you in heaven!”

Please accept my most sincere condolences... and my endless gratitude for sharing your Papa with us, his friends...his brothers.

Very sincerely yours,

ROLAND B.  INTING
