The Origin of Valentine's Day

Red roses, chocolates, quiet intimate dinners and romance seem to be de rigueur at this time of the year. That's what Valentine's Day is all about, right? Everyone seems extra sweet and caring and the ubiquitous heart &  Cupid are everywhere. But did you know that the origin of this holiday for the hearts isn’t even remotely romantic?

St. Valentine for whom this February fete is dedicated to was the Roman priest  who believed in marriage and commitment and who encouraged young couples to marry within the Christian church was what Valentine was about. And this was contrary to the edict of Emperor Claudius who prohibited the marriage of young people.

He secretly married them because of the edict. Eventually, Valentine was caught, imprisoned, tortured &executed for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second.

Isn’t it   admirable to see how people are willing to stand up for Christ and the Church?

St. Valentine and his martyrdom are indeed the best symbols for pure&unadulterated love.

As a tribute for this most romantic of all holidays,I would like to spotlight two couples whose compelling & heartwarming love stories continue to inspire and never fail to bring a smile on people’s faces.
