1991 Miss Bohol Sandugo: Ma. Recelle E. Adlaon

Mt. Pinatubo sure knew how to make attention- grabbing headlines from around the world when it reawakened from its centuries- long slumber on June 15, 1991.

Its after effects were felt around the world when it spewed tons of minerals and metals into the surface and adversely affected the stratospheric conditions of the globe.

It did not only change the landscape of the affected areas in Central Luzon and alter the lives of people in those areas but also threatened to mar the successful staging of the 1991 Bohol Sandugo Festival. Talk about perfect timing.

But no volcano or typhoon could stop Boholanos from celebrating the Blood Compact which is regarded as the first international treaty of friendship forged between two races. Another reason for the heightened excitement was the holding of the 1991 Miss Bohol Sandugo Pageant.

The bevy of beautiful Boholanas in its official line- up of candidates made it the most anticipated highlight of the annual month- long Sandugo Festival

EARLY FAVORITES FOR THE CROWN

Miss Tagbilaran Joanna Cheryl “Chewee” Evardone and Miss Candijay Haidee Ingking were pegged by pageant experts and mediamen as among the frontrunners for the crown. Both girls first came into the limelight when they made the Top Five of the 1989 Campus Girl Search, a Tagbilaran City- based inter- school personality search for high school and college students.

Chewee and Haidee finished not only as 1st and 2nd in that year’s Miss Tagbilaran Search but also as Class Valedictorian and With Honors during their high school graduation, respectively.

Truly epitomizing beauty, brains and breeding

Other favorites were Miss Antequera Mylene Indino and the statuesque Miss Duero Theresa Virtusio, a BS MedTech student from Cebu Doctors College.

It was also a return bout for three lovely and popular campus figures that represented their respective colleges in the 1991 Miss DWCT Search held in February. They were Miss CAS Jennifer Mejorada now representing Loon, Miss Nursing Recelle Adlaon who was representing Jagna and Miss Education Geneva Baja representing Guindulman

Trivia # 1.

Did you know that the 1991 pageant edition is the first and only time that the pageant was held in an open air venue?

A stage rose from the middle of the CPG Sports Complex with the cordoned off VIP section surrounding it. General admission tickets were seated at the grandstand area. It wasn’t a wise decision since July is a rainy month.

A slight drizzle in fact threatened to cancel the event. Since then, the pageant has been held in an indoors venue

PAGEANT HIGHLIGHTS

Finally, after an hour- long delay brought in part by an uncooperative weather and the huge turn- out of Boholanos, festival visitors & guests and tourists, the annual search for Bohol’s fairest maiden kicked off with the girls garbed in traditional Filipiniana attires parading onstage with their respective city and town mayors escorting them for the Traditional Introduction of Candidates.

The appearance of the top local city and municipal executives sent the message that the pageant which was on its second year as Miss Bohol Sandugo was strongly supported and endorsed by the participating local government units.

The girls also brought with them their towns’ popular or best- selling product which they also introduced to the jampacked crowd. For instance, Miss Jagna Ma. Recelle Adlaon brought with her the very famous calamay which is synonymous with the name of her town.

For the Casual Wear Competition, the girls wore identical red sleeveless dresses with white polka dots and they sashayed and strutted to the beat of Roy Orbison’s famous hit “Pretty Woman”

The girls then competed in Swimsuits, Evening Gowns and Interviews before the names of the 1991 Miss Bohol Sandugo and her runners up were revealed.

Insiders revealed that the original plan to have a Top Five who will undergo a final interview round was scrapped because of the inclement weather.

Of course, the judges still had to deliberate and make their final selections from among the five highest ranked ladies.

According to very reliable sources, Recelle won the judges over to her side with her angelic face, her refreshing candor and spontaneity, her natural and unrehearsed ways, her winsome smile and the great personality projection that was very evident in the interviews

Trivia # 2

Did you know that for the first time ever, the girls were allowed to express themselves in
any language or dialect during the Q & A portion with no point deduction on their scores.

FAREWELL WALK:

Before the reigning Miss Bohol Sandugo 1990 Tiffany Matuod Yap of Jagna stepped onstage for her final walk as Miss Bohol Sandugo, 1988 Mutya sa Bohol Elizabeth Anana of Guindulman and 1989 Miss Bohol Fiesta islands Winnie Moreno Lim of Tagbilaran City made a special appearance

SPECIAL AWARDS

Miss Duero Theresa Virtusio was Miss Diet Coke
Miss Tagbilaran City Chewee Evardone was Best in Gown
Miss Talibon Marissa Autentico was Miss Avon

FINAL RESULTS

1st RU Miss Duero Theresa Virtusio
2nd RU Miss Tagbilaran City Chewee Evardone
3rd RU Miss Talibon Marissa Autentico
4th RU Miss Candijay Haidee Ingking

BOHOL’S QUEEN FOR 1991

It was then the time for the pagant emcees Mr. Loi Palapos and Dr. Disi Yap- Alba to reveal the name of the new queen. “And the 1991 Miss Bohol Sandugo is …Miss Jagna!.”

A visibly shocked Recelle couldn’t believe her ears when her name was called as the big winner that night.

Although she was pressured by fellow Jagnaanons to duplicate the victory of Tiffany Yap as Miss Bohol Sandugo the previous year, she never had any high expectations.

“But of course, I was fully armed when I went to the battle” Recelle added.

She then left everything to Divine Intervention after she had conditioned herself to accept whatever the results would be that night.

She believed that whoever would be crowned that year’s Miss Bohol Sandugo would surely be the most deserving.

PAGEANT INVOLVEMENT

It was such a sweet victory for the introverted daughter of Engr. Celestino M. Adlaon and the late Mrs. Remedios S. Echevarria whose only reason for joining pageants was to overcome her shyness and improve her interpersonal skills.

Truly, her triumphant journey on the way to bagging the crown was already written in the stars

Her first pageant experience was the 1990 Miss Young Jagna Search which she won thus earning the right to represent her town in the Miss Bohol Pageant for 1991.

Early that year during the DWCT College Days Celebration, she was handpicked to represent the College of Nursing in the 1991 Miss DWCT Search after the original candidate who also came from Jagna withdrew from the pageant.

Despite the short notice, she accepted the challenge and gave a good fight. She placed 4th overall and won Best in Cocktail Wear.

Trivia # 3

Did you know that the Municipality of Jagna is the first town in Bohol to achieve a back- to- back victory in Bohol?  It would become a threepeat when another Miss Jagna, the sultry and smart U.P. Diliman educated Celevel Ranoco, won the crown in 1992. The record still stands until now

In addition, Jagna scored another three-in-a- row victory of a different sort when Soccorro Llido 1993, Genevieve Jamisola 1994 and Shiela Sumalinog 1995 placed as First Runner Up durin their respective years of participation in Miss Bohol Sandugo

LIFE AFTER MISS BOHOL SANDUGO

EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCES

After taking and passing the Licensure Exams for Nurses, she worked briefly at Lim’s Community Hospital. Recelle also worked at the then DWCT now Holy Name University College of Nursing as a Clinical Instructor, a reviewer, Level 4 Coordinator and Academic Chairman.

While still with DWCT, she pursued a degree in BS Education major in General Science. After completing the academic requirements, she took and passed the Licensure Exams for Teachers. She also finished her Masters in Nursing major in Medical- Surgica Nursing.

She is also an OB Gyne Rationalizer at HRD Review Center

DOMESTIC BLISS

Recelle and her husband Engr. Emmery Santino G. Paredes will celebrate their 10th year wedding anniversary on December 22 this year. Their marital union has been blessed with a pretty and precocious daughter Reanne Ella A. Paredes who is now eight years old.

Presently, she is working at her husband’s call center company and, at the same time, fulfilling her role as a full- time wife and mother

ADVICE FOR BEAUTY PAGEANT HOPEFULS

Recalling her involvement in pageantry during her younger days, Recelle averred that winning a crown is a matter of destiny and of course, hard work and discipline.

Her advice for beauty candidates who aspire to become beauty queens?

”Just be yourself, reach out and make new friends  and most importantly, enjoy the experience.

That way, you wouldn’t become bitter
should the crown prove to be elusive for you.

Expect the worst but hope for the best. At the end of the day, after the pageant has ended,

you are left with nothing except the memories”

2004 Miss Bohol Sandugo: Rhiz Nova Arenas

2004The year that Atty. Dan Neri Lim began his three term stint as City Mayor of Tagbilaran.

His sister Gesnell Lim- Yap of Bohol Tropics Resort handled the Miss Bohol Sandugo edition that year and what a fabulous and spectacular pageant it was.

On July 19, 2004, A jampacked crowd witnessed the grand coronation held at the Bohol Wisdom School gymnasium.

More than 20 lovely ladies from all over the province vied in the three- week long pageant that included a closed- door Panel Interview

Among the judges that year was 2004 Bb Pilipinas- Universe Maricar Balagtas.

It was her second time to judge the pageant
THE CANDIDATES:

The candidates included : Jill Ivy Maire Loquias (Antequera), Michelle Palaca (Baclayon), Bea Uy (Batuan), Maria Stephanie Alesna (Bilar), Cheryl Amormarie Eastman (Calape), Benia Nika Lao (Candijay), Donna Maricel Cardino (Clarin), Faye Michelle Mahinay (Corella)

Hanna Rose Milagrosa (CVSCAFT), Rodelyn Ann Buena (Dauis), Joyce Amor Lague (Dimiao, Marian Licayan (Duero),Abegail Gozum (Guindulman), Rhiz Novah Arenas (Inabanga), Hazel Laganson (Lila), Chimney Arat (Loay)

Jacqueline Tutor (Mabini), Rhea Jane Echavez (Maribojoc), Richelle Anne Guibone (Panglao), Grace Ylanan (Pilar), Lorraine Marie Evasco (Tagbilaran City) ,Redelyn Rosales (Talibon) and Kathy Lynn Atuel (Ubay),

MISS HNU VS MISS UB:

An interesting sidebit:

If Michelle Palaca of Baclayon didn't withdraw from the competition, it would have been a battle royale between two reigning campus beauty queens.

You see, Michelle was the reigning Miss University of Bohol and Rhea Jane Echavez of Maribojoc was the reigning Miss Holy Name University

2004 Miss Bohol Sandugo Press Presentation
June 22, Bohol Tropics Resort
EARLY CROWN FAVORITES:

Among the early faves were Miss Batuan Bea Uy, Miss Guindulman Abigail Gozum, Miss Tagbilaran City Lorraine Evasco, Miss Calape Cheryl Eastman, Miss Clarin Maricel Cardino and Miss Maribojoc Rhea Echavez who was also the reigning Miss Holy Name University.

Other girls that were gaining momentum included Miss Duero Marian Licayan and Miss Ubay Kathy Lynn Atuel who would eventually make a splash in the 2008 Miss Cebu Pageant considered the most prestigious pageant outside Manila. Richelle Ann Guibone who represented Panglao was also being talked about

But the girl to beat that year was Rhiz Nova Arenas of Inabanga who was recently crowned Miss Bohol Ubi Festival Queen 2004. She possessed not only the charm and allure of a beauty queen but also the eloquence and sensibility of the perfect spokesperson

The Coronation Night opened with the Parade of Festival Costumes and Introduction of Candidates. The Swimsuit and Evening Gown Competition came next

SPECIAL AWARDS:

Named Miss Talent was Miss Batuan Bea Uy. Selected Miss Photogenic and Best in Swimsuit was Miss Clarin Donna Maricel Cardino, then a sweet sixteen year old high school senior. Seven years later, Donna Maricel would be crowned Miss Mandaue City 2011 and would be selected as an official candidate to the 2011 Miss World Philippines Quest

THE TOP TEN

The cut to the Top Ten Semi- Finalists then followed. I remember advancing to the next round were the girls from Ubay, Calape, Dauis, Bilar, Clarin, Panglao, Batuan, Duero & Inabanga.

I remember the silence that followed after the announcement of the Top Ten was made. Perhaps, it was the shock of not seeing some of the early faves like Miss Tagbilaran, Miss Maribojoc, Miss Guindulman and Miss Tagbilaran City who didn’t make the Top Ten.

Well, it’s always a reality in pageants where beauty is relative and subject to the taste and preference of the judging panel

FINAL FIVE:

After the Top Ten Semi- Final Interview, another cut was made and continuing their journey towards the crown were Miss Panglao, Miss Ubay, Miss Calape, Miss Inabanga and Miss Duero. One final question sealed the deal for the girls.

At this point, Miss Ubay and Miss Inabanga aced the final question but the three other finalists acquitted themselves   well also.

Would it be the tall and voluptuous Miss Duero or would it be the sweet and articulate Miss Ubay? The half- American beauty from Calape was a crowd favorite as well.

Would the sophisticated and poised lady from Panglao steal the thunder from the other finalists?

But among the keen beauty watchers who were there that unforgettable night, it was on Rhiz that they placed their bets on. She was eloquence and candor personified during the final round .Only one would be declared Miss Bohol Sandugo 2004 and the rest of the finalists would be equally named Miss Bohol Sandugo Princesses

After the deliberations among the judges, Rhiz Nova Arenas confirmed her frontrunner status by being crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo 2004.

In the sea of gorgeous and alluring women, she stood out for being the complete package; beauty, brains and breeding

It was one of the rare instances where there was near- unanimity in the final verdict.

L-R: Miss Duero, Miss Ubay, Miss Inabanga, Miss Calape & Miss Panglao
Presently, Rhiz Nova Arenas is based in Makati where she is kept busy by a rewarding  & fulfilling career in the telecommunications industry.

I had the opportunity to emcee the 2010 Miss Bohol Sandugo with Rhiz Arenas
09 Miss Bohol Sandugo Daisy Jean Quilicot & 04 Miss Bohol Sandugo Rhiz Nova Arenas
Good luck Rhiz and Godspeed!

1991 Miss Cagayan de Oro: Cecille Auxtero

Girl from Ipanema: Tall and tan and young and lovely
Back in 1991,a Boholana made history in beauty pageantry in Cagayan de Oro City, the Gateway to Northern Mindanao, when she was crowned the fairest lady of the capital city of Misamis Oriental.

With no connections and relying only on her winsome charm, vavavoom figure, wit and personality, she defied all odds and won the crown.

Of course with her pageant experience, it was an easy breeze already for her.

Two years earlier, she was Miss Nursing and placed 1st RU in the 1989 Miss DWCT Pageant. Later that year as Miss Talibon, she placed 1st RU to Winnie Moreno Lim in the 1989 Miss Bohol Fiesta Islands Beauty Pageant

International socialite and lawmaker Tingting Cojuangco chaired that year's Panel of Judges

Who is this young lady?

She is the former Cecilia "Cecille" Auxtero now Mrs. Jonathan Requierme

during 1991 Miss Cagayan de Oro  City Press Presentation
 with fellow candidates
Best in Swimsuit

Tingting Cojuangco crowns our very own Cecille
Miss Cagayan dwe Oro & her Court of Honor
Here's a recollection of Cecille's 1991 Miss Cagayan de Oro Pageant triumph through an interview she granted me:

How many girls joined the pageant?
There were 20 candidates. Most of them were students from Ateneo de Cagayan and were prettier and taller than me.
Did you expect to win?
I never expected to win but I was very confident. I expected the worst but I also hoped for the best. I left everything to God already
What made you win the crown?
I think I entered the pageant at the right time. It's all about timing and destiny. I guess my morena beauty made me stand out from the mestizas who joined the pageant and I did okay also in the Interview Portion. Most importantly, I was just being myself and just enjoyed the whole experience
You're from Bohol. How did you qualify for the pageant?
I was qualified because I was born in CDO and prior to the contest, I had stayed there for more than six months so when I was invited to join, I had met the minimum requirements to be a candidate.
Anything to say about your Miss Cagayan de Oro Pageant experience?
I have nothing but good memories. I made friends with almost all of the girls. Cagayan de Oro City is indeed the City of Golden Friendship"
TRIVIA:

Did you know that Cecille has very good- looking kids with hubby Jonathan Requierme?

Her daughter Crizelle Jade is a certified beauty and her son JC is also a campus heartthrob

during Crizelle's very recent 18th birthday
during Miss Bohol International 2012 where Crizelle was a runner up
that's daughter Cassandra who is a budding beauty as well
Back when we were in college, she as a BS Nursing student and me as an English major, Cecille was one of the certified campus head turners who was very simple in her ways and manners

Thank You Cecille for bringing pride and honor to Bohol!

2011 Miss Batuan: Parade of Festival Costumes

The spectacular pageantry of dazzling & eye- catching colors during the Parade of Festival Costumes that opened the highly anticipated 2011 Miss Batuan Pageant

That's me hosting the pageant for the second time and flanking me are stunning Bea Uy and gorgeous fashionista Yes Tirol Dumagan both from Batuan and who came home just to be part of the event that served as town fiesta highlight

HOW IT ALL STARTED

My first involvement with the Miss Batuan Pageant was back in 2008 when I was invited to emcee the pageant. Three years later, I got another call from the municipality this time from the Project Chair herself, Marietta Adlaon Quesada of the Batauan, Bohol LGU who requested for my assistance as Project Consultant and Pageant Emcee for the 2011 Miss Batuan Search, I couldn't say no.

After all, Mommy Mayette, as we fondly called her during our student days is the go- getter type who wouldn't take NO for an answer. Besides, the refreshing and cool clime of the town up in Central Bohol would be a welcome change from the frenetic pace of Tagbilaran City

Endless crisscrossing from Tagbilaran to Batuan and back resulted in a grand and spectacular pageant night that drew mixed reactions from those who witnessed the pageant. Well, partly because so much was at stake in the pageant

The participating barangays and schools that placed in the Top Three were to be given cash incentives to finance or jumpstart any livelihood project or advocacies espoused

Kudos to the very credible set of judges that was never swayed by the very partisan crowd that rooted for the girls.

In the end, the crown went to the girl who was deemed to have the complete package; beauty, bundles of charm & confidence plus the requisite interview skills. Anyway, that's getting ahead of the story

OPENING NUMBER HIGHLIGHTS:

The pageant opened with the spectacular Parade of Festival Costumes. It was a riot of colors and a cacophony of live musical instrumentation which further heightened the frenzied and excited atmosphere inside the jampacked venue
