2000 Miss Bohol Sandugo: Mellanie Angelina Wallace

MISS BOHOL SANDUGO 2000

Sandugo Festival 2000 would always be fondly remembered for two big reasons.

The first would be the Mardi Gras- inspired celebration that saw Bohol’s top music bands performing at every corner along CPG Avenue, Tagbilaran’s main thoroughfare for the jampacked spectators and visitors.

The second reason would be the selection of an adorably charming high school senior as Miss Bohol Sandugo for that year.

Let’s relive the memory of the 12th edition of Bohol’s most prestigious beauty competition

ROTARY CLUB OF TAGBILARAN

For the second straight year, the Rotary Club of Tagbilaran spearheaded the selection of Miss Bohol Sandugo. Bohol cultural impresario Marianito Luspo, the man behind HNU’s Diwanag Dance & Theater Ensemble conceptualized & directed the show. Iconic dance instructor Nanay Nila Calimbayan Itac choreographed the dance numbers & production highlights as well as train the girls on stage projection & building confidence

PANGLAO ISLAND NATURE RESORT (P.I.N.R.) FUN SHOOT

Two weeks prior to the pageant night, the girls visited the corporate sponsors and had a fun shoot at the Panglao Island Nature Resort

STAR- STUDDED SHOW

It was a glittering pageant night with Bohol’s political heavyweights led by Gov. Rene L. Relampagos andTagbilaran City Mayor Jose V. Torralba and senatorial hopefuls Manny Villar & Obet Pagdanganan in attendance.

BOARD OF JUDGES

Members of the board of judges included multi- awarded director & pageant mentor Jeffrey Jeturian, talented Boholano cinema production designer Leo Abaya, TV / movie actress Angel Aquino & promising model Verns Boniel Buckley  who would later win the 2002 Ford Supermodel of the World- Philippines  and place in the Top Ten at the international finals

CULTURAL INSPIRED SHOW

The 2000 Miss Bohol Sandugo Pageant opened with a festive dance number featuring the girls garbed in similarly- designed two- piece dress ensembles with matching headdresses.

THE BIKINI MAKES ITS FIRST APPEARANCE

But the most earth- shaking and perhaps, the ground- breaking moment for the pageant was the debut of the bikini that year during the swimsuit segment of the pageant.

Not exactly, the skimpiest but nevertheless, quite daring already considering that Boholanas in general are very conservative.

The one- piece swimsuit in fact made its first appearance in Miss Bohol Pageant history in 1988 with Elizabeth Anana of Guindulman becoming the very first winner of the Best in Swimsuit special award prior to being crowned as the queen for that year

The swimsuit however made its debut in Bohol pageantry during the 1987 Miss Tagbilaran Pageant where the winner Fiel Angeli Araoarao and her runners up were crowned and sashed in their swimsuits. Rosario Inting, the eventual 1st RU is the very first Best in Swimsuit awardee in Miss Tagbilaran history

FINAL FIVE

After the girls competed in the swimsuit, evening gown and personal interviews, the the five girls who got the highest cumulative scores advanced to the semifinal round where they answered questions asked by the judges
FINAL FIVE: (L-R) Calape, Buenavista, Bilar, Tubigon & Tagbilaran City
After Miss Calape, Miss Tagbilaran City & Miss Tubigon were declared as the the top three finalists, it was back to zero for the girls and they had to hurdle one final common question

The final question as asked by judge Jeffrey Jeturian:
"If a genie would appear in front of you right now and would grant you three wishes, what would those wishes be and why?"
THE TOP THREE: Calape, Tubigon & Tagbilaran City

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO:
Miss Calape & Miss Tagbilaran City
