SETTING A RECORD IN PAGEANTRY
Megan Young’s Miss World victory that came right after Mutya Datul’s Miss Supranational conquest has given the Philippines a very unique distinction.
The Philippines is now the first and only country so far to win all the six major international beauty titles also known as the Grand Slam Pageants at stake
COUNTRY OF THE YEAR
In fact, the twin victories have already given us a wide lead in the race for the Country of the Year in pageantry.
It has been 40 years since we held the recognition.
The last time we held the title was in 1973 when we won the Miss Universe, 1st RU in Miss World and 1st RU in Miss International
Had our very own Evangeline Pascual accepted the Miss World crown after Marjorie Wallace of the United States was dethroned, we would have been the third country to have won both the Miss Universe and Miss World crowns the same year.
France first did it in 1953 and followed by Australia in 1972 then Venezuela in 1981. India achieved the feat twice. First in 1994 with Sushmita Sen as Miss Universe with Aishwarya Rai as Miss World. India did it again in 2000 with Lara Dutta as Miss Universe and Priyanka Chopra as Miss World

BUMPER HARVEST OF BEAUTY TITLES
The Philippines has already collected a total of 10 Grand Slam titles broken down as follows:
1973 Miss Universe Margie Moran |
FOUR MISS INTERNATIONAL Titlists
1964 Gemma Cruz
1970 Aurora Pijuan
1979 Melanie Marquez
2005 Precious Lara Quigaman 1964 Miss International Gemma Cruz |
Gemma holds the distinction of being the first Filipina to win an int'l title |
1970 Miss International Aurora Pijuan |
1979 Miss International Melanie Marquez |
Voted as the Most Beautiful Miss Int'l Of All Time |
2005 Miss International Precious Lara Quigaman |
2006 Miss Tourism Queen Int'l Justine Gabionza |
2013 Miss Supranational Mutya Datul |
Mutya is the first Filipina and Asian to win the Miss Supranational title |
Mutya won more than a million pesos in cash & merchandise |
Of course, the achievement would pale in comparison with the harvest from Venezuela but the point here is that the Philippines has won all six titles
Year 2013 is shaping up to be the Philippines’ banner year in pageantry with its conquest of the first two Grand Slam titles at stake.
Both the Miss Supranational and Miss World titles were won in September
THE PRESSURE IS ON FOR THE PINAY BEAUTY QUEENS
We can already imagine the pressure felt by Angelee de los Reyes, Bea Santiago, Ara Arida and Cindy Miranda as they prepare for Miss Earth, Miss International, Miss Universe and Miss Tourism Queen Intl, respectively
As of this writing, Cindy is already in China for the Miss Tourism Queen Intl pageant
Right now, the Philippines is in a roll and enjoying its Second Golden Age in pageantry.
Our country has always been known all over the world for its passion for basketball, cockfighting and beauty pageants
Ours is a pageant- crazy nation that fiercely protects and supports its candidates in international pageants.
The overwhelming support we give our beauty queens has been the source of both admiration and envy for other nations
Back then, the Philippines was the Powerhouse in Pageants long before Venezuela came into the picture.
During the 60's up to the mid 70's, we were either winning or making it as finalists in the major international pageants.
We experienced a drought especially in Miss Universe from 2000 to 2009
The explosive performances of Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup and Janine Tugonon in Miss Universe reignited our interest in pageants
Let us keep the momentum going.
Two down and four more to go before the year ends!
Break a leg Philippines and continue your global domination
